I use a Leica Disto A6 laser distance meter to measure and create a "blueprint" of your home or office.  Ok, so I like gadgets, but it actually helps minimize waste of carpet, tile or whatever matterial we are installing.  It takes us a lot less time and is much more accurate in measuring the project area as opposed to using a tape measure.  Plus it's way cooler.
